Kiev, European Championships 2019 Review
Plymouth divers; Emily Martin and Matthew Dixon have just returned home after representing GBR at the European Championships held in Kiev.
Emily Martin and platform synchro partner; Phoebe Banks from Leeds triumphed in the platform synchro event to win the silver medal – only 5.84 points away from gold. Going into the last round the pair were in second position and retained this by competeing a back two-and-a-half somersaults with one-and-a-half twists for the first time. The fruitful pairing have already won a bronze and gold medal this year in the FINA Grand Prix circuit.
Matthew Dixon alongside Noah Williams from London, also medalled in the platform synchro event to claim the bronze. It was a very close competition and they finished only 4.74 points off gold. The pair achieved a personal best score so were incredibly happy with their dives and the result. Earlier this year they won gold together at the British Diving Championships held in Edinburgh.
In the mixed 3 metre synchro event Dixon finished in 6th position with Scarlett Mew-Jensen from London. After successfully coming through the preliminary round to qualifiy for the 10 metre individual board, Dixon finished in 8th position overall – the top British performer. Apart from his fourth dive Dixon scored a very respectable 70 plus points on each dive. One error amongst divers of this calibre was all it took to put him out of the medal positions.
Alex Rochas who coaches both Martin and Dixon at the Plymouth Life Centre said that both divers had given solid performances. Martin and Dixon contributed 2 of the 6 team medals and GBR finished in 3rd position overall.
